Project 1b & c

Design Strategies and Exploration

Students are required to individually develop the group proposal from Project 1a into a refined architectural design by exploring and testing different ideas related to function, spatial quality, form, structure, and materials. Through iterative sketches, diagrams, study models, 2D and 3D drawings, and references to precedents and case studies, students must demonstrate a clear and rigorous design development process. The final outcomes are presented through design drawings, a design journal, exploration models, and visual references in a pin-up presentation.

Final Design Presentation

Students are required to further develop and finalize their Project 1b design into a fully resolved architectural scheme, integrating structural, environmental, technological, material, sustainability, fire safety, and regulatory considerations. They must explore the tectonic and poetic qualities of the design through elements such as light, texture, and materiality, while developing a selected portion of the building in greater technical detail. The final work should demonstrate critical thinking, feasibility, environmental awareness, and architectural resolution, presented clearly through comprehensive drawings, models, visualizations, and reports.

Reflection

Our site is surrounded by shophouses and shopping malls, while the Sia Boey Archaeological Park is a highly sensitive site due to its strong historical and cultural connection with the community. Any new construction on the site is likely to attract public attention and criticism. Therefore, this project aims to return the place to the people by introducing a new programme that responds to the site’s identity, heritage, and community needs.
