PHASE 2 & 3

ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN STRATEGY + DESIGN DEVELOPMENT

In this assignment, students are tasked to develop an individual design strategy for a Learning Centre in Brickfields, informed by Phase 1 studies. This includes defining a design position, conducting precedent studies, applying tropical architecture principles, and exploring form, space, and circulation through 1:200 physical models. In Phase 3, students need to refine and resolve the design into a complete architectural proposal, integrating form, space, façade, structure, services, environmental strategies, and statutory requirements, with a focus on place-making, street engagement, and a coherent tropical architectural response.

Reflection

During this project, extensive research was required to support my ideas, as urban sites involve many interconnected layers such as economic, political, and social factors. At first, I was disappointed with our assigned site because it lacked activities and felt more transient compared to another site. However, through deeper analysis, I realised there were many issues that could be addressed through design. Lately, the façade needed to respond sensitively to the undermaintained and dull surroundings, and this was also my first time using a grid, box, and diagonal design language. At times, I felt the building became visually boring during the design process, which challenged me to rethink my approach.
