PROJECT 1A

POETIC ASSEMBLAGE: < CHOREOGRAPHY + ENVELOPE >
TASK A

In this assignment, students will work in a groups of 4 to 5 members to study, choreograph, and document a culturally significant dance. Each member will take on roles such as dancer, documenter, or videographer. Together, the group will create a nine-grid choreographic piece, record notable movements, and capture 6 key "pause" moments with plans and elevations in detailed ethnographic drawings. Finally, students will scan and arrange these drawings into a GIF to present the dance sequence visually.

Genre: MulticultureInspired Contemporary Choreography

TASK B

In this assignment, students will expand on their previous choreographic ethnography by creating a 1:50 scale model using a subdivided nine-grid base. Each grid unit will represent a five-meter square, subdivided into an 81-grid structure where wood sticks are placed at intersections to represent body movement heights recorded in the prior task. Thin wires will connect these nodes to trace movement paths, and planes will be added to form a three-dimensional structure that embodies a chosen design principle, such as linearity or concentricity. Students will document each stage with photographs and sketches, producing a “poetic assemblage” that can spatially engage two dancers in an expressive pas de deux. The final outcome includes a hand-crafted model on an A2 MDF base, with orthographic drawings—plan and section on A2 watercolor paper. Additionally, student need to do a precedent study, including 2 Case Studies and 1 Site Visit reflection writing.

MOCK UP MODEL

Reflection

During this project, I enhanced my critical thinking and problem-solving abilities by addressing the weaknesses present in my models. I strengthened the ordering principle within my models through a process of trial and error, consistently refining and reworking them.

PROJECT 1B

THE (SITE) CHRONICLE + VISCERAL
Task A
Measure 2: History & Culture (Material + Non-material)

Students need to research and create a timeline of Malacca's cultural history from the colonial period to the present, highlighting significant events, dates, locations, key figures, communities, and organizations. They are also required to visit cultural museums to gather insights. Additionally, they must produce a morphological map of a selected Malacca site, layering changes in topography, land reclamation, waterbodies, buildings, roads, and greenery, supported by detailed observation and analysis.

CANVA BOOK

TASK B

In this assignment, students will analyze the site and its embodied experiences based on selected interests, synchronizing their observations and understanding into a visceral board. This board, formatted as one A2 portrait, should visually depict the essence of two micro-sites through analytical mapping, drawings, or diagrams. Using concepts from provided readings, videos, and A Feeling of History by Peter Zumthor, the board must illustrate the site's genius loci and poetic qualities through creative and insightful visual representations.
